Why Some Earthquakes Are Not On The Map
We map earthquakes above USGS's own significance threshold, and above a magnitude we set for EMSC.
Some instruments publish more than we act on, and you should know whose judgement that is.
USGS
USGS scores every earthquake it records and runs its own significant-events feed. We use that threshold, which is theirs and not ours.
EMSC
EMSC publishes no such score, so we set a magnitude floor of our own. That number is our judgement.
Below the threshold
We still read, store and can replay every tremor either instrument reports; we simply do not put it on the map. It is written here so you can disagree with it.
