Changes After Publication

We recapture the reporting behind published events and record what kind of change occurred.

What this page records

A published page can change after it is published. We recapture the reporting behind published events on a fixed schedule and record what kind of change occurred: only a displayed time, presentation alone, the article's own words, or removal at scale. We also record when our own account of an event reverses between reported, claimed and denied.

What a change is not

A publisher that revises constantly is not dishonest, and revision is ordinary. A change recorded here is a description of what moved between two captures; it is not a finding about why, and it is never a statement that anyone was pressured. Where our own capture differed rather than the page, that is recorded as ours.

Publisher, never a person

The unit is the publisher and the locality. No individual journalist is named anywhere in this record, and no byline is extracted. A named reporter beside an automatic classification would be a person accused by a classifier.

What we do not republish

Where words were removed we characterise the removal. We do not reproduce the removed text, and we do not store it - there is no column it could be held in. A reader who wants the earlier wording should ask the publisher.

When this record begins

Both records begin when we started keeping them. Changes before that are gone and cannot be reconstructed, and a small count here may mean a short record rather than a quiet one.
