Japanese Prime Minister considers replacing agriculture minister amid budget controversy

Status: published

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated during parliamentary questioning that she is considering whether Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Kazuo Yana remains fit for office. The remarks follow the publication of an audio recording in which Yana reportedly suggested that road budgets were reduced for municipalities whose leaders did not support him during the February election. An investigation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism found no evidence that Yana had requested cuts to local road budgets, and whether he will resign or be dismissed has not been confirmed.
