Chinese maritime militia vessel observed off eastern Taiwan
A Chinese maritime militia vessel was identified operating alongside a Chinese Coast Guard ship and a research vessel off the coast of Hualien in mid-August, according to surveillance reviewed by Reuters. The activity was detected by Taiwan's Apex Aviation more than 30 nautical miles offshore, marking the first documented appearance of such a militia ship in waters east of Taiwan. The specific intent and regular frequency of these deployments in the area have not been confirmed.
